Foods To Avoid If You Suffer From Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that shares joint pain and inflammation. There are different types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis.

There are treatments involving inflammation and pain-reducing medications. Though there is no specific diet to follow, studies suggest to include anti-inflammatory foods and lessen the consumption of foods that may trigger joint pain.

Here are the foods you must avoid if you suffer from joint pain and inflammation:

Dairy Products

Due to the type of protein they contain, dairy products may contribute to arthritis. For some individuals, this protein causes irritation to the tissues surrounding their joints. Others with arthritis have switched to a vegan diet which contains no animal product.

Instead of getting your protein from dairy and meat products, opt for other protein sources like nut butter, spinach, quinoa, beans, and lentils.

Fried And Processed Foods

In a 2009 study conducted by researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, they found out that limiting the amount of fried and processed foods eaten can actually lessen inflammation and help restore the natural defenses of the body.

Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Cut down the consumption of fried meats and prepared frozen meals,

Lower Your AGEs

An advanced glycation end product (AGE) is a toxin that appears when foods are fried, pasteurized, heated, or grilled. Certain proteins in your body can be damaged by AGEs. Your body tries to break it apart by using cytokines, an inflammatory messenger. AGEs may result in arthritis and other forms of inflammation.

In order to reduce blood AGE levels, researchers suggest that you must lessen the number of foods you cooked at high temperatures in your diet.

Salt And Preservatives

Always be aware of what is in your food. Nowadays, many foods contain excessive salt and preservatives. Some people with excess consumption of salt suffer from inflammation of their joints.
It may be worth a try if you reduce your salt intake to help you manage your arthritis. Read labels to avoid additives and preservatives. Avoid prepared meals as they are often very high in sodium.

Sugars And Refined Carbs

Level of AGEs increases if you have high amounts of sugar intake in your diet, thus resulting to inflammation.

Cut down white flour baked goods, sodas, processed foods, and candies to reduce your arthritis pain.

Corn Oil

Many snacks and baked goods contain corn oils or other oils high in omega-6 fatty acids. Though these foods may satisfy your taste buds, they may cause inflammation. Some studies suggest that consumption of fish oil, which contains omega-3s, may help with joint pain relief in certain people.

Instead of eating foods containing omega-6 fatty acids, choose those healthy anti-inflammatory omega-3 alternatives such as pumpkin seeds, olive oil, nuts, and flax seeds.

Alcohol And Tobacco

Aside from affecting your joint, alcohol and tobacco use can lead to a number of health problems. Individuals who consume alcohol have a higher risk of developing gout, while those smokers are at risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis.

Cut back on smoking and drinking. Have a healthy diet, regular exercise and an adequate amount of rest.
