Medicinal Benefits of Asthma Plant (Tawa-Tawa)


Tawa-tawa (Euphoria Hirta), also known as the “Asthma Plant”, is native to countries like Asia, India, Australia, Japan, Africa, and many other parts of the world including the U.S.

Other common names to this plant are garden spurge, hairy spurge, pill bearing spurge, baridhudi in India, and koko kahiki ng Hawaii. They are commonly found growing in open areas with lots of grass and they even grow even just along the roadside. This herb is very easy to grow.


Parts Used


Commonly used parts of the tawa-tawa plant are the stems and leaves, which is usually brewed as a tea. There are also times that the roots are used for certain applications.


Here Are Some Of The Medicinal Uses Of Tawa-Tawa


Lowers Blood Pressure


When consumed as tea, tawa-tawa can lower blood pressure because of its anti-diuretic agent. It contains an enzyme called angiotensin that decreases urine output.


Anti-diuretic


Tawa-tawa tea is great for people who drink too much coffee or alcohol and also those who become too dehydrated. This plant contains tannins and other essential compounds that help reabsorb electrolytes and water into the body.


Antibacterial, Anti-fungal, and Amoeba Agent


This herb has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-amoeba compounds that prevent the growth of these infections. The tea can also be used externally as a treatment for athlete’s foot. It is recommended to boil up to 50 grams of fresh leaves in 4 cups of water for 3 to 4 minutes if it is to be used internally and drink at least 3 to 5 cups a day.


Soothes The Gastrointestinal Tract


You can use tawa-tawa tea to soothe and calm the gastrointestinal tract and put an end to diarrhea. Use one teaspoon of dried leaves and steep in one cup of water for 5 to 10 minutes and drink at least 2 or 3 cups per day.


Can Be used to Treat Dengue


The tawa-tawa plant promotes and boosts platelet production which is important for treating Dengue Fever. Proper care should be administered when using this plant to treat this disease because it should not be used for more than 24 hours or up to 2 or 3 days in the beginning stages of Dengue Fever. There are still more studies to be done regarding the link between tawa-tawa plant and platelet production.


Asthma and Bronchitis


Tawa-tawa tea can be used as a bronchodilator to treat asthma and bronchitis. This tea makes you breath easier.


Skin Problems


You can treat wounds, boils, warts, rashes, and fungi by externally applying the fresh sap of the plant into the affected area. It usually turns blue when applied. Dried and powdered leaves can also be applied to open wounds for treatment.


Oral Ulcers (Singaw)


Because of the plant’s antibacterial agent, tawa-tawa tea can be used as a gargle to heal oral ulcers


Usage


Use tawa-tawa tea only for short periods of time. This tea is very powerful and must be used with care. Use it only for 24 hours or in some cases, 5 or 6 days.


Short-Term Use Only


These herbal tea works wonders when used properly and in moderation. Using this tea should not exceed in 7 days because it may burden our kidneys. Take a break for a couple of days before using it again as an herbal tea.


Precautions


Tawa-tawa tea or any form of the plant should not be taken internally by pregnant, nursing, or small children.
