Cucumbers And How It Helps In Cancer Prevention

Cucumbers are super nutritious. They contain nutrients that are essential for the human body. Its outer skin has high amounts of fiber and also contains a range of minerals including magnesium, molybdenum, and potassium. Meanwhile, its flesh has significant levels of folic acid, vitamin A, and vitamin C.

Cucumbers are rich in antioxidants that may help reduce our risk of several types of chronic and degenerative illness including cancer, autoimmune disorders, aging, cataract, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

Antioxidants are molecules that block oxidation, a chemical reaction that forms highly reactive atoms with unpaired electrons known as free radicals. Once these free radicals accumulate, they can lead to chronic illnesses.

A study in 2010 revealed that cucumbers contain flavonoids and tannins, groups of compounds that are particularly effective at blocking harmful free radicals.

In a 30-day study, results demonstrated that cucumber powder caused a significant increase in several markers of antioxidant activity and improved antioxidant status.

In addition to these, this member of the Cucurbitaceae family of plants was also found to be rich in bitter-tasting nutrients known as cucurbitacin.

A 2010 research review published in the Scientific World Journal, showed that cucurbitacin can help block the signaling pathways that are important for cancer cell proliferation and survival. Also, the same results were revealed by an article published in the International Journal of Health Services. Researchers of this study have found that cucurbitacin may help prevent the spread of cancer by stopping cancer cells from reproducing.

Moreover, the fiber present in cucumber skin may help protect against colorectal cancer. A 133-g cup of chopped cucumber skin can provide our body with 1 g of fiber.
