Baking Soda May Be One Of The Best Remedy Against Athlete’s Foot


Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet (it can also spread to the toenails and the hands). It comes with symptoms like burning skin, blisters that itch, flaky skin, etc. Luckily, this condition can be treated with some home remedies like baking soda.

The use of baking soda is an effective way to cure athlete’s foot. A study in Mycopathologia found that sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, does have antifungal abilities when used on the skin.

Aside from this, baking soda also acts as a great exfoliator that will help in removing the dead skin cell while its alkaline properties maintain the pH balance of the skin.

Here are the many ways on how to use baking soda against this fungal infection.


Baking Soda And Onion Juice


Onions contain compounds that can help neutralize free radicals and protect our body cells as well as improve our immunity when taken orally. Its antibacterial and antiseptic properties are effective in treating bacterial and fungal infections.

For this remedy we need to take a medium-sized onion and grate it. Squeeze the juice from it (at least 1 tbsp) and add 1 tbsp of baking soda. Mix well and apply it on the affected area. Leave it on for about 15 minutes and then wipe the feet with damp cotton. It is recommended to repeat this remedy at least once a week to see results.


Baking Soda And Apple Cider Vinegar


Apple cider vinegar possesses antifungal properties that will help in killing the fungus and soothes itching or inflammation which is just what we need to treat an athlete's foot.

Mix 1 cup apple cider vinegar in a cup of water and then add 2 tbsp of baking soda. Mix the ingredients well. Take a cotton pad and dip it in the apple cider vinegar solution then apply it on the affected area. Wash it off after 30 minutes using normal water. Take a clean towel and wipe it off. Continue to do this at least 1-2 times a week.


Baking Soda And Garlic


Garlic is a well-known home remedy that has been found to be effective against some fungi and bacteria.

A study in the Journal of Applied Microbiology, which states that fresh garlic extract can kill or stop the growth of Candida, a common fungus that infects humans.

Moreover, a study in Mycoses, which looked at a compound found in garlic known as ajoene. Results showed that the compound cured the athlete’s foot in every person who used it

A report in the Ulster Medical Journal, which found that garlic has effective antifungal properties.
For a powerful remedy against athlete’s foot, we need to mix 2 tbsp of garlic powder and 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar in a vessel. Add about a half-liter of water then soak the feet in this solution for 15-20 minutes. Wash the feet with normal water and wipe with a clean towel and pat dry. For best results, follow this remedy 2-3 times a day.


Tips To Prevent Athletes Foot


  1. Wash your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes
  2. Use anti-fungal powder after washing your feet.
  3. Avoid submerging the skin for too long.
  4. Keep your feet dry whenever possible.
  5. Towel dry your feet thoroughly after showering.
  6. Always wear flip-flops or other footwear in community areas.
  7. Keep your socks and shoes clean (foot powder helps).
  8. Don’t share clothing, especially socks or footwear.
  9. Take off your shoes whenever possible.
