Effective Home Remedies For Laryngitis


Laryngitis is an inflammation of the voice box (larynx) that causes our voice to become scratchy or hoarse or maybe even disappear completely. This short-term condition can be due to several reasons including infection (bacterial and viral), cold, flu, excessive alcohol use, and acid reflux. There are also times wherein the cause of voice distortion is singing, shouting, or cheering for a long period of time.

Here are some of the known home remedies that may help treat laryngitis.


Stay Hydrated


Staying hydrated is a good idea when we are sick. Drinking plenty of fluid can help with throat irritation, loosen phlegm, and flush our mucus. Having water, clear broth, and tea can help increase the flow of mucus, thus helping ease congestion. Avoid caffeinated drains as they can only cause dehydration.


Warm Saltwater


This remedy is one of the easiest and simplest way of treating laryngitis.

Results of a study showed that gargling with salt and water at least thrice a day helps in getting rid of laryngitis or upper respiratory tract infections.

Simply have a glass of warm water and add a half tsp of salt. Gargle with the mixture and then spit it out. Repeat it thrice a day.


Apple Cider Vinegar

The antimicrobial properties of apple cider vinegar can help fight body infections.

This remedy would require us to mix 1-2 tablespoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar into small a small glass of water and then add a teaspoon of honey for added benefits and taste. Consume the mixture once or twice a day until symptoms are gone.


Ginger Root

Ginger root has been used for centuries as a traditional medicine for a range of health problems. It can help with throat infections and dry, irritating cough that often accompanies laryngitis.

Have a fresh ginger root to a pot of boiling water to enjoy as a tea. Cut a 1 to 2-inch piece of fresh ginger root into thin slices and place in 1 quart of boiling water. Cover the pot and simmer on the lowest heat for 30 minutes. Let cool for 30 more minutes, strain, and drink 1/2 to 1 cup three to five times a day. Sweeten with honey if needed. We can also add this versatile root (peeled) into various dishes.


Garlic


Garlic is a wonder herb that possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that can work on common cold symptoms such as throat pain and sore throat.

Fresh garlic is extremely versatile. Dice up a few cloves and put them in a pasta sauce, stir fry, or salad. Or simply keep it in the mouth on one side and suck the juice slowly.


Chamomile Tea


When it comes to treating any kind of throat inflammations, chamomile tea is one of the best. The tea is loaded with terpenoids and flavonoids that help prevent and treat sore throat and hoarseness.

To prepare this tea, we need to boil around 1 tbsp. of tea chamomile in 1 cup or 8 oz. of water. Let the mixture steep for five minutes and then strain. Drink it 2-3 times a day.
