Pineapples May Help Promote Good Digestion



Known as a delicious tropical fruit, pineapples are a healthy addition to our diet. They are great sources of antioxidants that may help fight inflammation and free radicals in the body, according to study (1). These antioxidants are phenolics, flavonoids, and vitamin C. Aside from these, the literally covered in little spikes fruit also contains helpful compounds, such as enzymes that can fight inflammation and disease. It also has impressive amounts of vitamins and minerals that are helpful in maintaining a healthy body (2).

Present in pineapples is good amounts of a group of digestive enzymes known as bromelain. This important component is widely administered for its well-recognized properties, such as its anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic and fibrinolytic effects, anticancer activity, and immunomodulatory effects, in addition to being a wound healing and circulatory improvement agent (3).


Also, one of the roles of bromelain in the body is breaking down protein molecules into their building blocks, such as amino acids and small peptides (4). These protein molecules are more easily absorbed across the small intestines once they are broken down. Studies revealed that this scenario can possibly be helpful for those individuals suffering from pancreatic insufficiency, a condition in which the pancreas is not able to produce and/or transport enough digestive enzymes to break down food in the intestine and convert it into usable energy for the body (5).


In one study, researchers found that participants with pancreatic insufficiency who took digestive enzyme supplement containing bromelain had experienced better digestion as compared to those taking the same digestive enzyme supplement but without bromelain (6).


Moreover, a study published in Biotechnology Research International found that the bromelain in pineapple may also help reduce the effects of diarrhea (7).


Consumption of pineapples can also help reduce bloating as well as prevent other tummy troubles. Aside from its bromelain content, the fruit also has fiber – about two grams per one cup of cut-up fruit – which also plays an important role in digestion (8).



How To Enjoy The Goodness Of Pineapples


  1. Simply snack on bite-sized pieces
  2. Have a green smoothie by including some gloriously juicy chunks of pineapple, kale, mint leaves, coconut water, and lime juice.
  3. Grill slices and serve them with meat or as a tasty side
  4. Include the fruit when making veggie burgers to add sweetness.
