Can Jasmine (Sampaguita) Tea Help Protect Our Heart?



At present, soothing, aromatic teas have earned a spot on the list of approved foods and drinks for their numerous mind and body benefits (1). One of the best teas we can try is Jasmin tea. This beverage is known for its good taste and medicinal uses. Its beneficial components may offer a whole range of wellness benefits.



Jasmine Tea and Heart Health


A cup of jasmine tea is high in polyphenols, which may help protect against heart disease (2).


Its catechins, theaflavins, and flavonoids may help lower our risks of cardiovascular diseases by reducing or eliminating problematic inflammation within blood vessel walls, especially that associated with LDL cholesterol (3).


Results of a study showed that the anti-inflammatory catechins in jasmine tea are a key factor in inhibiting LDL-oxidation, a process that raises our risk of heart diseases. Oxidized LDL cholesterol is more likely to stick to our artery walls and form plaques thus narrowing or clogging our blood vessels (4, 2). By inhibiting the oxidation process, our blood pressure and cholesterol levels decrease, and this may possibly help us prevent long-term threats like heart diseases (5).


Meanwhile, flavonoids are good for the heart and help dilate the arteries by thinning the blood, lowering blood pressure, and reducing LDL cholesterol (1).


In a study, researchers concluded that there is a link between drinking tea – including jasmine tea, green tea, and black tea - on a regular basis and a lowered risk of stroke. Results showed that people who drank tea frequently were less likely to have a stroke (6).



How to Make Jasmine Tea


Aside from being delicious, jasmine tea also has a fragrant floral aroma with a sweet, subtle taste. It can be purchased as tea bags, loose leaves, and pearls.


When using the leaves or pearls, we simply need to add them to a pot and add hot water between 160–180°F (70–80°C). Let the tea steep for 3–5 minutes, then strain and serve.


Note: Boiling water should not be used as it can ruin the tea’s delicate flavor.
